Geosciences encompasses the study of the origin, evolution, and architecture of the Earth and its atmosphere. Our Department is uniquely positioned to offer a diverse college experience that relates biological, chemical, and physical Earth processes.

Our teaching philosophy is to provide solid training in theoretical and observational studies through the use of field and laboratory-oriented courses. We place a strong emphasis on the role of field and observational studies, the relationship of these studies to theory, and the use of different quantitative and analytical tools to solve geologic problems.

The Geosciences Department at TTU is well-situated to offer a diverse, field-based education. Located in the Southern High Plains, we're a quick drive "off the Cap Rock" into wild Canyons that expose the Permian and Triassic sedimentary sequences that play a major role in West Texas oil production. Further a field lay Proterozoic rocks in central Texas and New Mexico. And, right outside our windows pass the wild Southern Plains thunderstorms that form the basis of our intensive Atmospheric Sciences program.
