The Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech
University, Sigma Gamma Epsilon and the Discovery Channel are
pleased to announce an exclusive free advanced screening of the
Discovery Channel film "Supervolcano."
Yellowstone National Park, the world’s
first national park, sits atop a subterranean chamber of molten
rock and gasses so immense that the area, known for its geysers
and grizzlies, is arguably one of the largest active volcanoes
in the world. Granted, it's not your classic volcano, either in
size (it's huge), appearance (it's a large depression, not a
single mountain) or occurrence of eruption (at least hundreds of
thousands of years apart). But it is active, and the evidence is
everywhere. The results of an eruption would be devastating.
This film is produced with government agencies and is based on
the latest predictions of leading scientist as to what could
happen when Yellowstone erupts.
Come enjoy this world premier screening on
April 7, 2005 at 7pm in the Science Building, room 7. No
admission will be charged and the screening is open to all. A
scientific talk based on the geology of the movie will be
given by Department of Geosciences professor Dr. Cal Barnes on
Friday, April 8, in Room 234 of the Science Building. This talk
is free and everyone is invited to attend.
This event is sponsored by the Alpha Beta
Chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, the national honorary society in
Earth Sciences. Visit
